Description of Hangings
Ideas for this
design began forming immediately upon reading Richmond Presbyterian
Church's mission statement and receiving ideas from the worship
committee for portrayal of the Holy Spirit, the Burning Bush and
symbols of growth and change.
The first was a
feeling of a world; an on-going circular image symbolic of God's
unending love. Then the idea of the two doves (The Holy Spirit) came
into being. One would be descending into the flames, while the other
would be rising off the face of the waters.
On the right
side is the Burning Bush: a fresh, green plant that stays green even
through its burning. The flames reach high and form an image of
Pentecost; the dove descending into the flames as the Holy Spirit.
The left side is
filled with a sense of hope and new growth, from the sun rising over
the fields of wheat (symbolic of the sacrament of communion) and the
baptismal waters being poured out, to the green grasses and roots.
In an attempt to
put form to the struggles, joys, traditions and visions which make up
this community of faith, this design resulted in two pieces which
portray creation and revelation. This brings us back to God's
unending love.
